WE ARE ORGANIC. Yes, the 2023 vintage of our wines and grape musts will be different. It marks the year when our first organic wine and our first organic grape came to life. But why making this choice in a time when customers often debate whether to simply buy a €4 bottle of wine to share with their family and friends? Why would a winery with a 30-year history make such a serious decision and take on the more challenging path?
Nothing happens overnight. Our idea was to begin with the gradual restoration of the soil in which our vineyards are planted and cleans it from the chemical residues left behind from the past regime. We wanted to restore its natural fertility.
That’s why, in 2014, we started experimenting with organic farming on a smaller vineyard area to see how the soil would react and whether we could handle the challenge. It works. The sprayed treatments we introduced and which are approved for organic viticulture, did protect our vines from diseases.
Moreover, in difficult years with increased disease pressure, we found that by carefully monitoring the vines before any outbreak and applying organic treatments proactively, we could achieve its better protection. At the same time, we had to be more meticulous with manual labor, and our vineyards had to be carefully maintained. We changed the way of work with the soil and its treatment, enriching it with nutrients through minimal fallow land and the sowing of beneficial plants.
Nine years of trials and close observation of our vines have paid off. When the vines responded positively to our new approach and we saw that this was the right path, we decided to fully embrace these organic methods in our cellar as well.
Our motto is: Add nothing to the wine, take nothing away. This has been our approach since the 2022 vintage. The years 2022 and 2023were difficult and tested our patience, knowledge, and experience. But we have made it. That’s why we were able to apply for organic certification already for the 2023 vintage.
We now hold an organic certificate for our white grape must, BOBULO 2023, and for four of our white and rosé wines (our Rosé Blaufränkisch 2023 is even already available for purchase!). What’s next? We believe that the wines soon to be bottled will also earn their mark; the green organic leaf seal.
Wish us luck on this journey!
